When you can put a candidate at ease, create a smooth conversational flow, and elicit important information, you\u2019re one step closer to matching a candidate to the perfect role.<\/p>\n<p>And who can do this better than the people who\u2019ve achieved fame by asking questions?\u00a0 We\u2019re talking\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/owinfrey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oprah Winfrey<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/people\/2100593\/terry-gross\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terry Gross<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtfpod.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc Maron<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs.com\/shows\/the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Colbert<\/a>. Over the course of their careers, they\u2019ve collectively talked to hundreds of thousands of people and learned how to frame questions in ways that gather vital information and create fascinating conversations.<\/p>\n<p>Many of them have shared publicly how they conduct great interviews, and we\u2019ve sifted through their responses to come up with eight tips to help you hone your skills too. Do your prep work<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is Interviewing 101, but the best way to conduct a great interview is to do your research up front and find out who your subject or candidate is before you ever begin. No one is better than this than Terry Gross, the longstanding host of NPR\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/fresh-air\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Fresh Air<\/em><\/a>. She\u2019s asked probing questions and gotten compelling responses from many luminaries, including most recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colsonwhitehead.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colson Whitehead<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000932\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halle Berry<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/benedict-cumberbatch-0ab9281a3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benedict Cumberbatch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI read, watch, or listen to as much of the person\u2019s work as possible, so I have an understanding of what makes them, or their story, important,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/17\/style\/self-care\/terry-gross-conversation-advice.html?searchResultPosition=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she told<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/17\/style\/self-care\/terry-gross-conversation-advice.html?searchResultPosition=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/17\/style\/self-care\/terry-gross-conversation-advice.html?searchResultPosition=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0in 2018<\/a>. By doing this, she\u2019s able to clarify up front why this person matters and why they\u2019re worthy of her listeners\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p>You can do the same when you prep diligently for an interview. Listen deeply<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/owinfrey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oprah Winfrey<\/a>\u00a0has made her name as an interviewer in part because of her ability to listen closely and treat people with dignity. She\u2019s demonstrated this most recently in her much-acclaimed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=oprah+meghan+markle+interview+full&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sussexroyal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meghan Markle and Prince Harry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the more than 35,000 interviews she\u2019s conducted over the course of her career, Oprah has found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/02\/14\/oprah-winfrey-on-what-she-learned-after-interviewing-37000-people.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one thing in common<\/a>. \u201cEveryone you meet just wants to be seen and heard,\u201d she told an audience during her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oprahdaily.com\/life\/a28899378\/oprah-ww-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201d2020 Vision\u201d tour<\/a>\u00a0(before the pandemic started).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can tell you,\u201d she added, \u201cin your daily encounters, in your kitchen, in your work, in all of your relationships . . . that is what every person you encounter is looking to know. \u2018Did you see me? Do you hear me?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When you listen intently to a candidate, it helps them feel seen and heard. Know the three to five questions you want to ask<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When late-night show host Stephen Colbert was still working on\u00a0<em>The Daily Show<\/em>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0829537\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Stewart<\/a>, he put together a list of tips for staffers conducting interviews out in the field. (These can be found in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Daily-Show-Book-History-Correspondents\/dp\/1455565369\/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=1643930700&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Daily Show (The Book): An Oral History<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em>) Among his suggestions: \u201cGet clear on the three to five things you want your subject to say . . . and don\u2019t leave until you get them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a recruiter, this may mean that you want to make sure that you talk about a candidate\u2019s experience with artificial intelligence or ask about why they transitioned to a new career.<\/p>\n<p>In an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/podcasts\/working\/2014\/10\/stephen_colbert_on_his_improv_background_and_how_he_gets_in_character_for.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">episode<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/slate-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slate<\/a>\u2019s podcast\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/podcasts\/working\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Working<\/a>, Stephen added that the first interview question is the most important. \u201cAs long as I know what my first question is for the guest,\u201d he says, \u201cI kind of know what every other question is, because I really want to react to what their reaction to my first question is.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"component component-richText\" data-component-type=\"richText\">\n<div class=\"rich-text global-paragraph-style--reader\">\n<h2><strong>4. Put people at ease\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the things that has made legendary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/search\/results\/all\/?keywords=BBC&amp;origin=GLOBAL_SEARCH_HEADER&amp;sid=(Gs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a>\u00a0journalist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mediacentre\/2021\/parkinson-at-50\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Parkinson<\/a>\u00a0so good at his job is his ability to put people at ease. Over the course of his six-decade career, he\u2019s interviewed personalities such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.madonna.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madonna<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidbeckham.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Beckham<\/a>, and the late\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/12\/06\/world\/africa\/nelson-mandela_obit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nelson Mandela<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you must learn how to interview,\u201d he said in a\u00a0<em>Sydney Morning Herald<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/entertainment\/tv-and-radio\/how-to-talk-to-anyone-in-the-world-20030602-gdguyd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a>, \u201cbut the reason some people are better than others is about a capacity they might have for settling people. It\u2019s about body language; it\u2019s about convincing people they should be comfortable with you.\u201d Even the most famous guests, he said, are often nervous and afraid about interviews. He puts them at ease as quickly as possible by making eye contact and smiling at them\u00a0 \u2014 and even turning on a little charm.<\/p>\n<p>It may be more difficult to do this on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/business\/talent\/blog\/talent-acquisition\/tips-for-conducting-seamless-virtual-job-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video or phone interview<\/a>, which is how many interviews are conducted right now. But the main idea is that candidates, and celebrities, often feel afraid as they approach interviews. Keep it conversational<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtfpod.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc Maron<\/a>, who started his podcast\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtfpod.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWTF with Marc Maron<\/a>\u201d in 2009, was one of the first to elevate the podcast interview to an art form. Since then, he\u2019s spoken with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/barackobama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barack Obama<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/janegoodall.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jane Goodall<\/a>, and director\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0868219\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guillermo del Toro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of his strategies is to approach the interview like a conversation. \u201cTo me it\u2019s still a conversation and that\u2019s what I\u2019m aiming for,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/arts\/10634586\/mastering-the-talk-marc-maron-discusses-his-interview-techniques\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0San Francisco\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/kqed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KQED<\/a>\u00a0in 2015. \u201cI have places I want to go, and I will usually find an area that I think is rich and could reveal more about the person.\u201d Marc educates himself about the person ahead of the time, forms a picture in his mind of who they are, and engages them on what he thinks. \u201cMost of the time I\u2019m wrong,\u201d he admits, \u201cbut I really seek a connection and a nice, full conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When you approach an interview like a conversation, the candidate is more likely to feel comfortable and engage with interesting answers (all the while appreciating that you\u2019re not a chatbot).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"component component-standaloneImage\" data-component-type=\"standaloneImage\">\n<div class=\"standalone-image-component standalone-image-component--article-width\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"standalone-image-component__image lazy-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/media-exp1.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/D4D08AQEh-eb_vsvM3g\/croft-frontend-shrinkToFit1024\/0\/1644958748938?e=2159024400&amp;v=beta&amp;t=7DsB3fWf-FCcqjxaO7c1pdJ_JcEfxrQKUVZKMWNJZQw\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 767px) 767px, (max-width: 1024px) 1024px, 1920px\" alt=\"Photo of Larry King\" \/><figcaption class=\"t-16 t-black--light standalone-image-component__caption\">Larry King (source: Thor Nielsen \/ NTNU, via Wikimedia Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"component component-richText\" data-component-type=\"richText\">\n<div class=\"rich-text global-paragraph-style--reader\">\n<h2><strong>6. Ask short, simple questions and give your interviewees lots of room to talk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In his more than five decades as a radio and television talk show host, the late\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/23\/arts\/television\/larry-king-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry King<\/a>\u00a0interviewed about 50,000 people, from presidents to pundits, from movie stars to swindlers. One of his tricks? Ask open-ended questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gene-demby-b2a4454\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gene Demby<\/a>\u00a0has a long history of talking to people about some of the most compelling issues of the day. As founding cohost of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/npr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a>\u2019s award-winning podcast\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/510312\/codeswitch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Code Switch<\/a>, he\u2019s guided numerous conversations about identity and race and most recently interviewed author\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashleycford.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashley C. Though she prepares diligently for interviews, she also knows when to let conversations take their own course. \u201cI\u2019ll start with a list of all the things I\u2019m interested in,\u201d Krista says, \u201cbut I realize that many of those questions fall away. What I get interested in are questions that will be interesting to\u00a0<em>them<\/em>\u00a0[the interviewees].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This, she adds, can help elicit the most interesting information. \u201cIf you ask a question that\u2019s interesting to them, they\u2019ll often start thinking out loud in real time,\u201d she says. \u201cMaybe they\u2019ll even say something they haven\u2019t said before \u2014 and you have this moment of surprise and discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And when this happens in a job interview, it gives you a chance to get to know who the candidate\u00a0<em>really<\/em>\u00a0is and what lights them up.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Final thoughts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While interviewing is an art, it\u2019s also a skill. That means that the more you do it, the more confident and competent you\u2019ll become.
